In Shadow of the Horsemen, Sandra Saidak gently suggests to us that it's time to wake up. No, our current "civilization" has not "always been this way, and there's nothing we can do about it." Civilization has not always been a pit of frequent deliberate and cruel violence, sadism, masochism, and greed. People have not always regarded the planet earth as a merely a staging ground for human events. These things are not "just our nature." While there is no doubt that we have the capacity to cultivate these characteristics on a large scale; that this capacity is likely a biological potential, that does not mean that humanity must cultivate these characteristics. But humanity has cultivated them, as current events make clear, and Ms. Saidak's books suggest that humanity can change. Apocalypse isn't necessary.That is what this book is about. In Shadow of the Horsemen, Sandra Saidak continues the story of Kalie's journey that she started in Daughter of the Goddess Lands. These books are of a genre of stories that speculate on the archeological findings of Marija Gimbutas, and the findings of Mythologist, Joseph Campbell. They are stories about the well advanced, and probably, relatively comfortable, gender egalitarian, peaceful, and prosperous civilizations that existed over 6,000 years ago. Concurrent with the later years of these peaceful civilizations, a very different kind of civilization developed in another part of the world. This different, other civilization was brutal, valued cruelty, violence, raiding, thievery, and male dominance. The evidence suggests that in the older, peaceful civilizations, divinity was perceived as feminine or bisexual, and housed in the planet earth. It's brutal counterpart civilization perceived divinity as something separate from the physical world, "out there," up in the sky, usually male, and unattainable until physical death. Eventually, starting about 5,000 years ago, the brutal, invasive civilizations commenced invading the older, peaceful ones. The result is that today, we are all mixed. Apparently, the invasive civilizations variously conquered, were assimilated by, or appropriated the older peaceful civilizations.
But how and why did all this happen? No one knows for sure. Short of being alarmist, we really must think about this. To this end, I highly recommend Ms. Saidak's books. In a manner that is accessible to, and appropriate for teens as well as adults, Ms. Saidak has done a superb job of speculating on the sources of cruelty, the role of changing climate on the development of cruelty, cruelty as a form of adaptation, and the capacity to unlearn cruelty. She also shows us what beautifully fulfilled lives humans can have were they to unlearn cruelty, and learn to pay constant regard to, and adapt to earth's ongoing changes. We are shown the internal changes and struggles the characters undergo in this process. To top it off with a clever touch, the central character, a young woman named Kalie, is a story - teller by trade. Here, we are implicitly informed that story - telling and poetry were the original manner of passing on knowledge. Perhaps appropriately we are exercising that ancient story - telling ability to figure out how and why humanity made its fateful turn toward violence and cruelty that still dominates our lives.
Ms. Saidak examines this question as it happened in Europe, but I must add, that parallel processes occurred in other parts of the world, and other authors have speculated in writing as Ms. Saidak has.

I could hardly wait until I got home from work the day I finished Daughter of te Goddess Lands. All I could think about is downloading Shadow of the Horsemen. Hard as I tried I couldn't keep my nose out of this book. It was fast paced with many unexpected twists. Sandra, hurry, quick, already we wait impatiently for your next book. Frankly, I can see a third book or a new series.
Very good story outline! it flowed very well. Just wish there was more depth to the characters, I never got to imagine much of their personal selves, how they looked, color of hair, eyes was often vague on all the characters. I've read all three books in this series, and would recommend them to others who like this time period of writing! Keep up the good work Sandra!!
The story of Kalie continues in Shadow of the Horsemen, and what a story! This book is full of feeling. I returned to it every chance I got, and when I wasn't reading, I found myself wondering what was happening. The first book was good, but Saidak really comes into her writing in this second book. The world is vibrant and the characters are fully three dimensional - even the most minor character was someone I felt like I could actually talk to. Please tell me there will be a third book!
I really enjoyed this. I could easily envision being this slave girl and the range of emotions she felt through the entire story. Vividly painted the landscape and people in my mind
This is not the typical "more of the same" sequel; more of a "you knew the story wasn't finished". In truth, it's not quite finished even now, but temporarily resolved after some unexpected yet inspiring plot twists.
I've called this review "The power of STORIES". That seems to be the overriding theme here. In "Daughter of the Goddess Lands", the first book in the series, it seemed almost incidental that the main character's best talent was storytelling. Here it becomes important. Sir Terry Pratchet said that our world is created by stories. Here, one storyteller is trying to create a better world than the one she was inducted into, despite an environment where the prevailing attitude might be described as "It is what it is" and "as long as I have mine..." Did the storyteller succeed? Maybe.
I enjoyed the first in this trilogy - Daughter of the Goddess Lands - and this second book was even better. I'm really looking forward to the third book, and yet this book didn't leave the reader hanging with a feeling that the story was incomplete the way many authors do in order to force readers to buy the next instalment. I felt I got my money's worth without being "forced" to buy the next book and that makes me even more willing to buy the next book. I hope it'll be out soon, but I'd advise the author to invest in a good proof-reader to avoid several typos and other small errors I spotted in this book. The typos didn't spoil it for me but it is an unnecessary distraction and it is a major turn off for some readers.
I've been a fan of Jean Auel's Earth's Children series for more than 20 years, so it was a special treat earlier this year to discover Sandra Saidak's fresh view of prehistoric cultures.
While Auel gives us insight into the Ice Age clash between two different kinds of humans, Saidak's novels focus on the cultural repercussions when prehistoric matriarchal and patriarchal societies first collide. I can only imagine how difficult it was to envision the matriarchal societies, which most people in our patriarchal culture deny ever existed.
Reading SHADOW OF THE HORSEMEN was my birthday present to myself, and I made a good choice! I'm looking forward to Kalie's continuing adventures in this epic saga. I love seeing a strong woman depicted as a reluctant heroine who learns to appreciate "the other side," while not losing focus of the higher good.
