A sweeping saga from Bryce Courtenay, Australia's most popular author.

The Persimmon Tree opens in Indonesia in 1942 on the cusp of Japanese invasion and the evacuation of Batavia (Jakarta) by the Dutch. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Duncan is on holiday there, in pursuit of an exotic butterfly known as the Magpie Crow. It's an uncertain, dangerous time to be in Indonesia, and Nick's options of getting out are fast dwindling. Amidst the fear and chaos he falls in love with Anna, the beautiful daughter of a Dutch acquaintance, and she nicknames him 'Mr Butterfly'.

To assist in the escape, Anna's father gifts Nick his prized yacht, Vlermuis, to sail to Australia. Singapore has just fallen, the Japanese have made it to Sumatra, and the waters are dangerous. Vlermuis is not long out of Batavia when Nick is forced ashore for repairs. He witnesses the bloody execution of shipwrecked Allied soldiers by natives, and while burying what's left of the bodies, Nick notices one wounded soldier has escaped death, and he carries him back to his yacht.

The rescued soldier is a lower-class Irish Catholic American called Kevin Judge. He has no sailing experience, but he assists Nick in navigating through some dramatic storms and the two form an unlikely and lifelong friendship.

After reading The Power of One, I wanted another by Bryce Courtney. This is only the second of his works that I've read, and if The Power of One weren't such a hard act to follow, I'd surely have given The Persimmon Tree 5 stars; it simply wasn't quite as incredibly wonderful as my first read by this author. It is excellent, offering adventure, what I thin is a fairly accurate look at military action in what were the Netherlands East Indies during WWII, a "base-note" of love story that is non-intrusive but provides the hook at the end, and some fascinating looks & comparisons of very different cultures (national & socio-economic within given cultures), human values, and how different people may handle shifts from political positions of dominance to submission, &/or portents of such change. Courtney is a fine author/writer.

The Persimmon Tree (Audible Audio Edition) Bryce Courtenay Humphrey Bower Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

My actual rating would be close to 3 1/2 stars. As a Canadian the historical viewpoint of Australia and the Solomons was an excellent new perspective for me. I was not aware the Japanese were that close to invading the Austrailian mainland. The story itself is above average but the one drawback is too much of the novel is spent on the lead female character's dealing with Japanese captivity although I understand why the author did this. I took a few university classes on the Pacific theatre so I thought I knew most of this stuff but this novel opened up my viewpoint on this. Anyone interested in WWII specifics must read this novel.
A young Australian butter-fly hunter meets a pretty Dutch girl just as the Japanese army is about to invade. Her family are leaving and her father is heatbroken at leaving his beloved boat and asks the young man to sail it to Australia. He is cuaught in the tragedy of the Suma Straight and when he arrives home he joins the Navy. This is an excellent portrayal of the tragedy of war, the use of the young girl by her captors and the love that endures until they meet again. JayJay
I agree that The Persimmon Tree was every bit as good a novel as The Power of One. Unlike one reviewer, I also liked Tandia. The Potato trilogy left me wanting, however, and regretting that I bought all three tomes at once. I barely got into the first book and knew that I'd made a mistake (as had Bryce Courtenay), so I wasn't eager to purchase The Persimmon Tree. Well, loving Japanese culture as I do, I plunged forth and can happily say that all three books of his that I've liked so far will remain fond memories.
Very well written. A bit long but it got better and better as the story developed. This is a good WWII novel about the impact of the Japanese invasion on Java. Read this as one of our book club choices. Would highly recommend.
I found this to be a 'bloke' book. I've read several other Bryce Courtenay novels and couldn't put them down. 'The potato Factory', and 'Four fires' etc and found this to be a bit much of a labour to read. I finished it because I wanted to see where the story went. The subject matter didn't appeal to me, ie. the lengthy sections about the Japanese occupation of the area. I expected to be moved by the subject matter and found I got bored instead. I guess it's a personal choice. I'll still keep reading Courtenay novels. I'll just choose the subject matter more carefully next time. How ever as usual the author had researched his material very thoroughly.
Because I lived in Indonesia, and have been all over Australia, this was a very welcoming book. The coming of age story of a young man, stuck in Indonesia as the 2nd WWar is starting. And what happens to him and the young Eurasian girl he loves. Her story is as compelling as his.
This was my first novel by Aussie author Bryce Courtenay. I read one editor's comment on it and decided since he was so enchanted with it to go ahead and buy the electronic version for my ipad. Sure enough just like him I couldn't put this novel down. It's very long but you don't even notice, it doesn't feel like it drags on. In a nutshell it's a story of somewhat unlikely and exotic romance between 16 yr old Java girl Anna van Heerden (half Javanese half Dutch) and Aussie butterfly "chaser" Nick Duncan in the cruel and insecure times of war between Japan and Australia. Separated by war and various life-threatening events they eventually reunite but the damage done by the war does leave its mark on their lives and happiness. They are not the same innocent teenagers they once used to be. Nevertheless it's a story of victory of the soul over evil and tragedy, especially on Anna's part. I agree with the editor that Nick's character pales in comparison with her heroic spirit and unmatched bravery.
